The Joy

The color of this Rosé is amazing. Watermelon pink meets a warm salmon hue of summer. Simply beautiful. This stainless-steel fermented Rosé is an absolute knockout on first pour, but in my opinion, if allowed a few minutes to warm up from refrigerator temperature, the dancing aromatics of cherry wax candle, apple skin, hints of ruby red citrus spirits and passion fruit will open up and hit all areas of the nose. It's incredible, and only gets better with patience.

The palate is incredibly complex for a Rosé. Too often the genre is simple, lean and short, but find every opposite adjective for this Promise ’22 ’the joy’: fresh, long and lengthy. There’s fruit...a bevy of strawberry reds, cherry pinks and the bold effect of that almighty "fruit cocktail in the tin." Remember how fun that flavor is?! The mouth is packed from edge to edge. Tongue swirling, beautifully balanced, clean, vivacious and direct. This wine will spread its wings. If you're getting just three, thank you, but you’ll need six. And if it’s six, better get a case to enjoy both this spring and summer. This wine won’t last—enjoy!

The 2019 growing season gifted us with an amazing array of wines so easy to speak very highly about, and Promise is the pinnacle of the lineup. This vintage begins with a gorgeous, pitch-black hue that stares right back on the approach. The aromatics to start are also very dark, tightly focused, and highly scented with a bravado of black cherry, clove, hints of graphite and coffee enveloped in a fumy blanket of barrel vanillin.

The mouthfeel of this wine is youthful and finely structured. Saturated but with finesse. Primarily sourced from prestigious vineyards in Oakville and Atlas Peak, this wine brings the mountain and valley together seamlessly. The palate is massive and brooding with purity of black fruits, blueberry, camphor, spices, and tart, chewy currants. The entry is serious and then mouth-filling, finishing for over a minute and dancing every second through the palate! This is one crown jewel of a Cabernet that if cellared correctly, will survive for 20 years and longer.

Aged for 29 months in 100% new Darnajou and Taransaud barrels, bottled unfiltered and unfined. 325 cases produced.

The Gratitude

The 2019 'the gratitude' is bold, seductive, and absolutely loaded all around! This ripe, inky blend will certainly become a favorite and has every making of a classic. With the varietals weighing in at 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec and, 2% Merlot, the wafting fragrance shows incredible depth and beauty. Fumy aromatics lift with each swirl showing toffee and milk chocolates and intermingling with violets, ripe blackberry preserves and cola berries.

The texture is like crushed cashmere and velvet leaving no interior of the mouth uncoated. Very fine grain, powdery tannins play at the sides of the tongue to gently lift acidity at the start. Moments later the midpalate floods over with a dashing array of black fruits, dried cherries nuanced with a touch of tobacco and leather. It’s all very cleverly timed with this wine. The lengthy finish becomes a beautifully tapered trailing edge without holes nor studders. Pure elegance.

I’m always excited to see where blends arrive in years 5, 10 and 15, and a year such as 2019 has me increasingly so. Quite enjoyable today, I believe with proper ageing this will be a 20-year red, without question.

Aged for 29 months in 90% new French Oak, bottled unfiltered and unfined. 200 cases produced.

The Love

This year’s Love is certainly a charming, beautiful Pinot Noir.  Sourced from gravely, steep south-facing slopes, located at the northern tip of the Russian River Valley, this seductive wine begins with a beautiful visual veil of dark garnet. The nose is a rising cacophony of ripe raspberry, cherry skin, cocoa dust and fine, savory cooking spice. The mouthfeel has a smooth and warm start with flavors of Japanese plum, raspberry and tart cherry—building to a crescendo of clove, toasted French oak and black tea tannin and fresh, youthful acidity. At this early stage in the wine’s life, just a few hours exposed to air allows this wine to open quite nicely and expose a softer structure and fuller, rounder body profile.

2019 was a near perfect vintage in RRV, with plenty of sunshine, lower yields as compared to 2018, and smaller berries and clusters. Harvest was September 11th and the wine was made in small lot, open top vats with hand punchdowns consisting of 10% whole clusters. 100% native yeast and native secondary malolactic fermentations were employed and this wine was aged for 16 months in 40% new Francois Frères French oak barriques.  Bottled unfiltered and unfined, 294 cases produced.

Our Winemaking Philosophy

We believe that meticulous farming and cultivation are essential to great winemaking. An overwhelming attention to detail is applied at every step of a vine’s life and throughout every growing season from beginning to end. Once the fruit is harvested, every element is afforded great care: selection, yeasts, crush, maturation, and cooperage, all of which are overseen with great passion. Our style of winemaking looks to find the greatest expressions of each varietal and vineyard. Special focus is given to deliver a perfect blending of balance, complexity and depth. Kirk Venge, a Napa native prodigy, has been the winemaker since 2014.
